(In other words, ALL Montfort juniors and seniors!) The big College Fair of Westchester/Putnam is this week. Colleges and their representatives from all over the country gather under one roof for high school students to meet and discuss their college needs. They'll be on hand to give you brochures, information and answer questions. Parents are encouraged to attend. Literally hundreds of people attend, so be prepared for it to be quite crowded.

Additionally, there are usually people on hand to offer information regarding financial aid. This is something that all juniors and seniors will want to attend, so mark your calendars.

New SAT prep place opens in Westchester

SAT. ACT. AP. Any one of those dreaded standardized tests is enough to trigger that familiar sense of fear into the mind of a teenager with college aspirations. Luckily, help is here for these students.

Ivy Insiders, a preparation program designed to guide high school kids through the tests they have grown to loathe, has existed on a nationwide level since 2003. That is when Nick Green, a then-Harvard University student (and now Phi Beta Kappa graduate) who received a perfect score on the SAT, decided to utilize his knowledge of the exam for the sake of its future victims. The company was born, and it has since expanded to over 200 branches throughout the United States.

Expectations Lose to Reality of Sports Scholarships

From the NYTimes article:

"Excluding the glamour sports of football and basketball, the average N.C.A.A. athletic scholarship is nowhere near a full ride, amounting to $8,707. In sports like baseball or track and field, the number is routinely as low as $2,000. Even when football and basketball are included, the average is $10,409. Tuition and room and board for N.C.A.A. institutions often cost between $20,000 and $50,000 a year.

"People run themselves ragged to play on three teams at once so they could always reach the next level,” said Margaret Barry of Laurel, Md., whose daughter is a scholarship swimmer at the University of Delaware. “They’re going to be disappointed when they learn that if they’re very lucky, they will get a scholarship worth 15 percent of the $40,000 college bill. What’s that? $6,000?"

Manhattan College

Manhattan College is a private, 4-year college affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Located in Riverdale in the Bronx, it is a residential campus in a very large city. 3,026 degree-seeking undergraduates, 399 graduate students. 57% of applicants are admitted.
